February 11, 2024 Meeting Reminder

Crystal Lake Midwest Quilt Guild will meet on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at the Algonquin Township Building, 3702 Hwy 14, Crystal Lake, Il.

The meeting will start at 11:00.

After the meeting, we will start working on our Rope Bowls.

Attached you find the supply list for the Rope Bowls.   You can also view meeting information on the blog (clmqg.wordpress.com) under Rope Bowls Supply list.

**Make sure you bring a machine that has a ZIG ZAG stitch**

We have some exciting retreat information for everyone that will be presented at the meeting.

Please make sure you bring in your 2024 Guild Dues ($40.00.  If you went to the retreat you will get a “refund” and your dues are $35.00)

We are doing the Big Jar again this year, so bring your Show & Tell, so your name can go in the drawing.

If you’re attending the bowl making class, you may want to bring lunch and something to drink.

Rope Bowl Supply List

Supplies

  • Clothesline rope (recommend 3/16” to 1/4” thickness).  Cotton is easiest, or a cotton/poly blend.  Avoid rope that is cotton around a poly core, because the outside has a tendency to slip off.
  • Fabric strips/scraps.  Any strip from ¼” to 1½” will do, but if you want a fully wrapped bowl bring longer strips in larger supply.  Bias strips wrap more smoothly but are not necessary.
  • Matching sewing thread (50 wt. is best) for the top thread and the bobbin thread.  This can either be neutral or colored if you want to see the stitches.  Variegated is great for this!
  • Sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch
  • Heavy-duty sewing machine needle (sharp 100/16, jeans/blue band)
  • Sewing pins and clips
  • Scissors

Optional

  • Stiletto
  • A glue stick (any cheap glue stick will do)
  • Hot glue gun

CLMQG General Meeting Minutes

Sunday October 15, 2023

Members In Attendance: 23 plus 1 guest

Today, we welcomed two new members to our guild Susan H. and Kari K. Thank you for joining us!
We also wished all those with October birthdays a happy birthday!

Treasurer’s report included income from the garage sale. There were no expenses.

With the addition of our two new members a new membership list will be going out this month. Keep an eye on your emails.

We welcomed quilters from the Village Quilters guild in Lake Bluff who had on display a quilt they are raffling off at their upcoming show. All are invited to attend the “Quilts from the Village XVIII” show taking place on October 20-21 at the College of Lake County. More details can be found online: villagequilters.org

October Bag Workshop

Thank you so much to Cindy for organizing and teaching our two bag making workshops today! They turned out great! The project bags were made in the morning and the big ass tote bags that were completed after the meeting. Directions for both bags have been added to the blog.

No Point Star Christmas Block Swap

Thank you to Ann for organizing this fun Christmas block swap. Members and guests brought their No Point Star blocks to this October meeting and Ann was able to sort and redistribute all of the blocks. We can’t wait to see what projects everyone makes! Be sure to tag the guild with any finished quilts.

November Meeting

There will be a no-sew project for our November meeting. We will be making folded star ornaments. These make great ornaments or even gift tags. Homework instructions will be sent in an email prior to the meeting. Material will need to be cut and folded prior to the meeting in a bias tape style fold. It is recommended to get your seams as flat as possible to make folding easier. Julie found the best pressing spray was Magic Sizing, but Flatter also worked well. She found Best Press was not stiff enough. Magic Sizing iron spray can be found at Jewel.  For the meeting it is recommended to bring a small iron and pressing mat, tacky glue and toothpicks if you have them available.

During the November meeting we will also have some fun games and prizes that Carrie has organized. And most importantly we will be finalizing the board for next year. More details on open positions can be found below.

November Retreat

A few space are still available for the upcoming November retreat to be held in Lake Geneva. Vikki will be sending out a suggested packing list and more details to those who have signed up. The room for sewing will be available starting at 9am on Friday November 17th through 4pm on Sunday November 19th. It is suggested to bring multiple projects so you have options for the weekend as well as comfy clothes and don’t forget your POWER CORDS!

Members In Attendance: 23 plus 1 gues

Julie called the meeting to order at 12:01pm. We welcomed one guest Pam Wilson, and wished all those with September birthdays a happy birthday!

A membership list will be going out and includes both addresses and phone numbers. Melodie will also be looking into some type of guild membership cards that could be used for potential discounts at quilt shops. Julie knows of a store in Arizona that offers a discount but if anyone comes across another store or program where we can obtain a discount please share with the group.

We welcomed Sue from Country Quilters of McHenry who had on display several quilts they were raffling off. Members had an opportunity to support this guild through the purchase of raffle tickets.

Members Trunk Show

At today’s meeting we enjoyed our first ever Members Trunk Show. Four of our members, Darlene McIntyre, Cindy Byron, Marge Snyder and Mary Benz took us on a journey through their quilting history with wonderful stories, personal achievements and beautiful quilts! Thank you very much ladies for sharing your time and talents with us. We look forward to making this an annual event.

October Bag Workshop

In October we will be making two separate bags. Cindy showed a sample of the Vinyl Project Pouch which includes a vinyl see-through window. The second bag is the Big Ass Tote. Supply lists were passed out during the meeting and can also be found on our website at the below link. The guild will be providing the vinyl for the small project pouch.

October Workshop

We will be making the vinyl project tote in the morning from 10-12, followed by the October meeting at noon. The big ass tote bag will be made after the meeting from 1-4.

Board Nominations

October is the time to make nominations for board positions. Please consider donating your time to our group through one of the various positions. Julie will put together a list of any open positions. Voting will take place at our November meeting.

Postcard Swap

The postcard swap that was presented in July is well underway. Ann had several postcards on display that members have received. Overall it was a well received challenge and it was discussed that this would be worth repeating in the future.

No Point Star Christmas Block Swap

Please bring your completed blocks to the October meeting in a plastic bag with your name and how many blocks you brought. Ann will be sorting the blocks at the meeting so you will take home your blocks at the end of the day.

A tip for sewing the diagonal lines is to use Cluck Cluck Sew’s diagonal seam tape. This tape is applied to the bed of your sewing machine and allows you to position the blocks in such a way that you do not need to mark lines on each block. For more information see the instructions on Cluck Cluck Sew’s website.

There will be a no-sew project for our November meeting. More details to come. We will also vote on officers for the 2024 board. The newly voted in board members will take over the first meeting in January 2024.
